چکیده

Carbon dioxide is stored in the body in various forms, including carbonic acid, bicarbonate and carbamino compounds. The various stores of CO2 can be considered to be in the lung, blood, soft tissues and bone. In an adult human, these stores are thought to be in the order of 120 liters of CO2.’ It is common knowledge that hyperventilation will reduce the level of CO2 in the blood; however, only a small fraction of the total CO2 of the body is in the blood. Questions arise, then, as to how much CO can be eliminated by hyperventilation, from where does it come and in what manner does elimination proceed. Several studies have been made of exchanges of CO2 in animals and in man. In 1916, Liljestrand’ found within the first hour of hyperventilation by men that 0.8 to 1.0 liter of stored CO2 was eliminated for each 1 per cent decrease in alveolar concentration of CO2. Brocklehurst and Henderson,’ and Adolph and associates’ subsequently derived widely varying values for the CO2 capacity of the body. Several investigators have studied the CO2 stores of animals.’3’ From hyperventilation experiments on anesthetized dogs, Farhi and Rahn’ found that alveolar CO2 tension declined in an exponential manner and calculated that one half of the readily available stores of CO2 was eliminated in 4 minutes. The present study was undertaken to obtain additional information on the rate of elimination of CO2 during hyperventilation in man, which might contribute to an eventual better understanding of clinical conditions such as CO2 retention and narcosis.

Studies on hyperventilation; electrocardiographic changes in normal man during voluntary hyperventilation.

Any normal human being will present certain cardiac symptoms, besides the well-known tetany signs, during voluntary hyperventilation, which removes carbon dioxide. Thus a feeling of precordial oppression, in some cases increasing to proper precordial pains with eradiation to the left arm, and often accompanied by an unaccountable sensation of fear, will generally develop after 1 or 2 minutes of...

Background & Aims: Hyperventilation is the most common breathing pattern disorder. Several studies indicate that hyperventilation is common in asthmatic patients. There has been no study on prevalence of hyperventilation syndrome in Iran so far. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of hyperventilation syndrome in asthmatic patients. Materials & Methods: This cross-sectional study was ...

An unusual example of exercise-induced asthma.

A patient with exercise-induced asthma is described in whom the post-exercise fall in F.E.V.1 was not prevented by the inhalation of isoprenaline immediately before exercise but was almost completely prevented by subcutaneous atropine given 40 minutes before exercise. A large fall in F.E.V.1 similar to the fall after exercise occurred after carbon dioxide-induced hyperventilation and voluntary ...

Post-hyperventilation apnoea in patients with brain damage.

A study of 100 subjects has confirmed that brief voluntary hyperventilation commonly causes apnoea in patients with supramedullary lesions, but not in healthy people. Apnoea was related to drowsiness rather than to the extent of the lesion; it was unrelated to the measured reduction in end-tidal carbon dioxide tension.

Oral progesterone treatment in chronic obstructive lung disease: failure of voluntary hyperventilation to predict response.

Previous studies have shown that some patients with chronic obstructive lung disease and hypercapnia will respond to medroxyprogesterone with improvement in arterial blood gases. The exact mechanism of this effect is unclear but it is presumed to be a result of ventilatory stimulation. To determine whether the ability to correct arterial blood gas abnormalities by voluntary hyperventilation wou...
